Mill Green Vs Redbourn
Home Match Report
Thursday 28th August 2008
Drew 2 - 2

First of all, my thanks to Dave Griffin who took a day off work to host this match whilst I was on holiday. It is great to have other parents who will pitch in and help out from time to time.

Well, the Mill Green Jeddah Cup team remains unbeaten 6 matches into the season with only 2 matches left to play. You will see a league table at the bottom of the email with our current position. I won't spoil the surprise by telling you what that is now.

The details of the matches were as follows:-

James Griffin & Joe Gash won 4 & 2 against Scott Heron & Jamie Woor
James & Joe did not waste any time ripping into their opponents. An opening sequence of gross par par birdie par left Scott & Jamie reeling 3 down after only 4 holes. The Redbourn duo managed to half the 4th and 5th holes but James & Joe put together another run of three winning holes on the 6th through 8th holes to go 6 up through the turn. After winning the 10th to go 7 up with 8 to play it looked like James and Joe would end the match very early. However, Scott & Jamie rallied, winning the 11th but when they only managed to half the 12th the match was dormie 6 up in favour of the Mill Green pair. Then Scott & Jamie began an incredible run of their own with a gross par par birdie on the 13th, 14th and 15th winning 3 straight holes and pulling the match back to only 3 down with 3 to play and piling the pressure onto James and Joe. Eventually Joe managed to win the 16th to close the match down 4 & 2.

Will Silverosa & Jarvis Hinds won 2 & 1 against Lewis Wiggins & Sean Wiggins
This match got off to a cagey start with the first 5 holes halved, Will and Jarvis sharing the responsibility of matching the Redbourn scores. But then the Wiggins brothers started to pull away from Will and Jarvis, winning the 6th, 7th and 8th to go 3 holes up. Luckily, the Mill Green pair both parred the 9th whereas Lewis and Sean could only manage 5's so Mill Green were only 2 doen in this match at the turn. Will parred the 10th to pull the match back to only 1 down and then the 12th to go all square again - a great fight back. It looked like things could slip away again when Sean & Lewis won the 13th, but Jarvis hit back with great pars at 14 and 15 to put Mill Green ahead for the first time in the match. Will took the 16th to put Mill Green dormie 2 up and then Jarvis delivered the coup de grace, halving the 17th to win the match 2 & 1. A great turn over from the half way score !

Greg Swain & Harry King lost 5 & 3 to Jamie Knight & Connor O'Grady
Greg Harry lost the 1st and won the 3rd to end up all square after 3 holes. However, losses on the 4th and 6th put them 2 down after 6, a situation which was maintained as they halved the next 4 holes, through the turn and as far as the 10th. Unfortunately, the match quickly slipped away from them at this point as Jamie & Conner won the next 3 holes to put them on the 14th tee dormie 5 up. There was a brief glimmer of hope as they won the 14th but a loss on the 15th allowed Redbourn to claim the match 5 & 3.

James Kinsley & Alan Clark lost 1 down against Kumar Starkie-Gupta & Alex Copson
James & Alan started well, going 1 up after the 1st and then getting halves on the 2nd and 3rd. Kumar & Alex won the 4th, but the Mill Green pair struck back with James winning the 6thand Alan the 7th to put them 2 up, a lead they maintained through the turn. Halves on the 10th and 11th allowed James and Alan to maintain this lead, but Redbourn hit a double blow on the 12th and 13th to put the match all square again. Mill Green took the 14th with a great gross par by Alan but Redbourn brought the match all square again with a win on the 16th. A halved 17th made for an interesting finish, coming up the 18th all square. Unfortunately, Redbourn won the hole with a good gross par and consequently won a close fought match 1 up.

Reserve match -Liam Hulse won 3 & 2 against Tom Smith & Alex Williams
Liam managed quite a feat, winning the reserve match 3 & 2 against two opponents after Sam Bennett unfortunately had to drop out with a bad foot.

Another tied match but still we remain unbeaten. The competition organisers have released an updated league table which I include below as well as in an attached file, which also includes all of the results to date.

Teams  - Points - Matches Played
Mill Green - 28 - 6
Aldwickbury Park - 27 - 5
Harpenden - 21 - 5
Redbourn - 18 - 7
Brookmans Park - 10 - 3

I need to sort out what will happen about the points from our cancelled match against Brookmans Park.I have been unable to reschedule within the club diary and the competition rules state that I can claim all 8 points as it was Brookmans Park who cancelled. It should be noted that Brookmans Park have only managed to play 3 matches and if they have had problems getting teams out against the other clubs as they did with us then Aldwickbury could get a default 8 points and Harpenden 16.

But it looks like our final match against Aldwickbury might be the competition decider ! Whatever happens there we have done ourselves proud this year.

Don’t forget to keep checking the Junior notice board for fixtures and results.
