Mill Green Vs Redbourn
The second half of the Jeddah Cup season got underway last week with
an away match against Redbourn Golf Club. Unfortunately, I could not
be there to look after the squad myself, so my wife Sharon and sons
Tom & Mark took on the task, kindly assisted by Viv Ofstedahl. For
the first time, the team wore the Mill Green Junior Team shirts
donated by Chris Bushell and they all looked very smart. Unusually
for a Jeddah Cup match, the weather was not great, it was a bit
chilly and windy. However, undeterred the matches got underway.
Ella Ofstedahl & Emily Dorrington won 2 up against Kumar Starkie Gupta & Alex Copson
It is always a picture to see two teenage boys tower over our girl team
members and then see the look on their faces when they are told Ella will be
giving them shots. To their credit, Kumar and Alex did not let this phase
them for long and after halving the first 3 holes with Ella and Emily, they
took the 4th and 5th to go 2 holes up. However, the girls kept their cool
and after halving the 6th and 7th holes they won the 8th and halved the 9th
to go through the turn only 1 behind. Then Ella and Emily began a
devestating sequence of holes, winning the 10th, 12th and 13th to turn the
match on its head and go 2 up. Kumar and Alex then parred 2 of the next 3
holes but a very strong defence by Emily and Ella meant the boys could only
half the holes and ended up dormie 2 on the 17th tee. The girls had a slight
scare when Kumar and Alex won the 17th to keep the match alive but quickly
rallied to win the 18th and the match by 2 holes. Liam Hulse & James Griffin & won 5 & 4 against Lewis Wiggins & Scott Heron
The players in this match did not believe in halves. Of the 14 holes played
only 1 was halved and this was not due to erratic or poor play.12 of the
holes were won or halved with a GROSS par or birdie. James birdied the 1st
hole to get the Mill Green pair off to a great start 1 up. This was followed
by the only half of the match when both teams parred the par 5 2nd. James
and Liam took the 3rd but Lewis and Scott hit back hard with a birdie and a
par to take the 4th and 5th to pull the match back to all square. At this
point the momentum seemed to be with the Redbourn pair, but Liam and James
were having none of that and won the last 4 holes of the front nine to surge
4 holes up in the match. They then continued the run and took the 10th and
11th to go 6 up in the match. It was almost too easy for Liam and James and
a lapse in concentration allowed Lewis and Scott to stage a mini comeback,
winning the 12th and 13th to pull back to just 4 down again. However, Liam
and James stepped up a gear again to win the match 5 & 4. Max Ofstedahl & Jack Grogan lost 7 & 6 to Jamie Woor & Connor O'Grady
Max and Jack had one of those days when they just could not get going and
Jamie and Connor were not in the mood to let them off the hook. Shortly
after the turn the Redbourn pair finished the match off 7 & 6. Callum Walker & Sam Nicholls won 2 & 1 against Dean Gregory & Sean Wiggins
This was a great example of the match experience and resilience even a
couple of our younger Tigers have. Dean & Sean, put out by the fact they had
only been matched up against a couple of half-pint golfers, set off like a
train and shot to 4 up after only 5 holes. However, young as they are, Sam
and Callum have tons of match and competition experience between them and
their heads did not drop ! Gradually they turned the game and pulled back a
hole here and there, slowly increasing the pressure on their opponents until
eventually they managed to pull ahead towards the end of the match. The win
Callum and Sam finally achieved is a great example to every Tiger and Junior
golfer at Mill Green - never let your head drop and keep on trying hard. You
never know what you might achieve ! Sam & Callum won 2 & 1.
Reserve match - Tom Jeffries & Alex Thomas won 3 & 2
against Alex Williams & Harry Shipton
Tom and Alex halved the 1st hole but fell behind after they lost the 2nd.
However, birdie par par on the 3rd to 5th holes quickly turned around the
match and put them 2 up. The Redbourn pairwere not going to roll over and
halted Tom and Alex's run by winning the 6th, but Tom & Alex just came back
again with another couple of holes to go 3 up before Redbourn pulled one
back again to go through the turn just 2 behind and then held Tom & Alex to
2 halves before winning the 12th to come back to only a single hole behind.
Holes were exchanged on the 13th and 14th before Alex & Tom managed gross
birdie, gross par on the 15th and 16th to win the match 3 & 2.
This is a fantastic result for Mill Greenin the Jeddah Cup. To go to a
course we have not played before and to beat a team that plays there week in
- week out is quite amazing. We won 4 of the 5 matches if you include the
reserve result. The team should be really proud of itself. Quotes of the Day ...
"It's not quite that bad . . . Ella does play for England"
"Actually, I'm only 9 !"
"Well, Ian Poulter came to visit me and cut my lawn"
