Mill Green Vs Brookmans Park
Away Match Report
Saturday 28th June 2008
Drew 2 - 2

Our second away match took place at Brookmans Park Golf Club on Saturday 28th June. It was a visit made more interesting by the fact that Brookmans Park GC were also hosting the county colts match between Hertfordshire and Essex that day. The Mill Green Jeddah Cup players were able to watch the colts work through their practice routines and then tee off from the 1st with some fantastic drives. In the Hertfordshire team was Matt Spencer from Mill Green so there was some local interest there too.

Unfortunately, Brookmans Park Junior A team had lost a couple of players that day and so co-opted two of their Jeddah Cup players. As Brookmans Park did not have any reserves available, they could only field 6 players and so elected to forfeit the fourth match. This meant that we had 4 spare players who were grouped into a fourball so they could still experience the course.

The details of the matches were as follows:-

Max Ofstedahl & Greg Swain lost 6 & 4 against George & Jacob
After a shared 1st hole, Max and Greg managed to go ahead, winning the 2nd, but were immediately pegged back on the 3rd. A series of 3 halved holes then kept the match all square until George and Jacob won the 7th and 8th to put Brookmans Park 2up at the turn. Max and Greg were unableto make any headway and in fact were left reeling as George and Jacob took the first 3 holes of the back 9 to go 5 up. It was a big ask to comeback from 5 holes down and in fact Max and Greg only managed to hold out for one moreholebefore Brookmans Park took the 14th to win the match.

James Griffin & Sam Bennett won 2 & 1 against Mitchell & Stuart
This match swung back and forth throughout the afternoon. Mitchell & Stuart took the 1st but James and Sam hit straight back, taking the 2nd just for Mitchell and Stuart to take the 3rd to go 1 up again and then the 5th to go 2 ahead. Sam & James held their own over the 6th and 7th before Sam nicked the 8th to pull Mill Green back to only 1 hole behind at the turn. The momentum had been turned in the match and James immediately took the 10th to pull back to All Square and then the 13th and 14th to move Mill Green 2 ahead in the match. Mitchell and Stuart did manage to pull a hole back on the 15th, but James immediately took the 16th to increase the gap back to 2 holes before Sam halved the 17th to settle the match for Mill Green.

Will Silverosa & James Kinsley lost by 1 hole to Josh & Alex
Another match that swung back and forth, but with probably the most exciting finish of the afternoon. Will and James fell 1 hole behind on the 1st but heldtheir own on 2 & 3 before taking two consecutive holes on 4 & 5 to reverse the score and go 1 up. They managed to hold their lead until the 7th where Josh & Alex began a run of 3 consecutive wins of their own to shoot 2 ahead at the turn. However, Will & James refused to fold and took the 10th to reduce the deficit to 1 hole. Again the momentum shifted and Josh & Alex took the 11th and shortly afterwards the 13th to go 3 holes ahead, a lead they maintained with a half on the 14th to stand 3 up with 4 to play. However, showing great character, Will and James would not give up. Will took the 15th and James the 16th and 17th to pull the match back to All Square on the 18th tee. Unfortunately, Will and James both pushed their tee shots on the 18th right behind some small bushes and trees between the 18th fairway and a neighbouring one, whereas Josh and Alex both hit beautiful drives down the middle of the fairway – Advantage Brookmans Park. Will struggled from his lie and took a couple of shots to get up near the green, James however hit an amazing iron shot from a blind position right up onto a difficult two tier green and just through the back. Both Brookmans Park boys then put their second shots right over the back of the green and James looked like he was in prime position to take the match – Advantage Mill Green. Josh struggled to get his ball out of the rough and played himself out of the hole and Alex took a couple of shots to get his out and just of the back edge of the green in 4. James hit a slightly heavy chip shot but still left himself with a long but hole-able put vs Alex’s long chip or put from the back of the green. Surely Mill Green would get at least a half out of this match to win the fixture. But golf is a fickle mistress. Alex hit a beautiful, long put from just off the green right into the middle of the cup for a 5 . . . net 4because he had a shot on the hole. Now James was left with a put looking a lot less hole-able for the half. He came close with a good effort but just did not manage to hole it. Match to Brookmans Park, fixture tied.

Liam Hulse & Tom King took on Tom Jeffries & Alex Thomas in the reserve fourball. A ding dong battle ensued all afternoon with the fourball halved.

So another away fixture halved with 4 points to each side and Mill Green even came close to winning it, a great result.

We do not have any fixtures in July but the second half of the season starts up on 11th August with an away match against Redbourn. The Jeddah Cup organisers have released the first league table which I have attached but also reproduced below.
