Mill Green Vs Aldwickbury
Home Match Report
Saturday 31st May 2008
Drew 2 - 2
Mill Green hosted our first Jeddah Cup match on Saturday. A
combination of half-term-holidays causing unavailability and an
unforeseen clash with County Boys coaching made it touch and go
whether we would get a full team out. But thanks to a last minute
dash from a tennis tournament by Sam Nicholls and his dad Ian and
the generous offer of the Aldwickbury Park organiser to allow Mark
Jeffries to play despite having a handicap a shot below the accepted
minimum for the competition, we got underway with a full team. The
weather was forecast to be very wet all afternoon but amazingly we
ended up with glorious late spring sunshine.
The results of the matches were:-
Tom Jeffries & James Griffin lost 1 down to Alex
Kushner & Jonathan Kushner
James and Tom were looking well set as they went through the turn 2 up
but by the 16th tee, Alex and Jonathan had turned a 2 hole deficit into
a dormie 3 lead. However, James and Tom proceeded to win the 16th and
17th before narrowly missing a chance to win the 18th and half the
match. So all in all a close, ding-dong battle all the way.
Thomas King & James Kinsey won 8&7 against George
Thompson & Dan Davies
This was a very convincing win by Thomas and James against two very good
players. Thomas in particular gave the opposition no chance by shooting
a personal best gross 85, 10 shots under his handicap. With Aldwickbury
Park requiring gross pars to half holes or birdies to win them, this
match was concluded quite quickly.
Sam Bennett & Alex Thomas lost 3&2 to Charlie Roberts
& James Linningan
In this match, Mill Green and Aldwickbury Park traded blows on the front
9, with first Mill Green fighting ahead, but then Aldwickbury Park
coming back to establish a narrow one hole lead by the turn. However,
Aldwickbury Park managed gross pars on the 10th and 11th holes to surge
to a 3 hole lead. Mill Green fought back to only a 1 hole deficit again
by the 14th but Aldwickbury then proceeded to win the next two holes to
wrap up the match on 3&2.
Mark Jeffries & Sam Nicholls won 8&6 against Jake
Graham & Angus Raeside
Who said you need to prepare yourself thoroughly for a competitive round
of golf? The mad dash from his tennis tournament, arriving literally 2
minutes before his tee time, did not seem to phase Sam. Mark, called in
to replace an absent Matt Binstead, discovered that a couple of quick
stretches on the 1st tee was much better preparation than a careful warm
up routine on the driving range and putting green. Both Mark and Sam
played superbly to establish a 5 hole lead by the turn and then won the
10th, 11th and 12th holes with gross pars to win the match 8&6.
So the final result was a halved fixture with each team scoring 4
points, a reasonable start to our Jeddah Cup campaign.
We now have two more fixtures in the next two weeks home and away to
Harpenden, three in total in June. There is a squad list on the Junior
notice board in the clubhouse and I have also included it as an
attachment to this message. Please indicate your availability on the
list on the notice board as soon as possible or email your availability
by return to this message.
Thank you
Tom Jeffries
