Tigers Vs Men
Home Match Report
Saturday 6th October 2007
Drew 3.0 - 3.

At last it was the turn of the Mens Section at Mill Green to take on the Tigers. As this was a match on the main course, the Tiger's team was selected from those Tigers having a full main course handicap with the Men (and big Juniors)still having to give plenty of shots away.

The match was played from the back tees over the front nine and under normal four ball better ballmatch play format.  Every time the match swung towards the Men, the Tigers would pull one back and level the score so it was no surprise that as the group's came in, the players sat on the mound at the back of the nineth to watch the others finish and see which way it would end up.

In an attempt to watch his teammates tee off first for a change, Men's Captain Ken Wood decided to go out last.  If this was an attempt to avoid the limelight, it didn't quite work as the crowds were all on hand to watch him finish in what proved to be the deciding match!  Sitting at all square after the first 5 matches, things did not look good for the Men from the mound as they watched the Tigers in the distance teeing off first, followed by some not so good tee shots from both the Men, with my own tee shot long gone into the weeds!

A great shot from the rough by the Men's Captain followed by a long putt ending up in gimmie range meant that the men were in for a par.  It was now down to Tom Jeffries from the Tigers who had about a 12 footer to win which he graciously let slide by the cup meaning that it ended as it had begun, all square!  A great match to both play in and watch.

The match ended with food and drink followed by nearest the pin prizes for Ray Forster for the men and Matt Binstead for the Tigers.  The Tigers showed great class out on the course and the Men are confident that this will now be a permanent fixture in the Club Diary.

Thanks to Viv for the photos and organising since I was actually taking part for a change !

The individual matches played out as follows:

Ella is no stranger to being the only girl out there and in Match 1, she and Christian earned the respect of Men's committee members Phil & Dave who have proved over many matches that they are a formidable partnership.  The Tigers went 1 up after the 1st but the lead slipped and they found themselves 2 down after 5.  They didn't need their shots on the 6th as the Tigers combined for net eagle / net birdie to take the hole and bring it to within 1.  A loss on the 7th followed by a half on the 8th meant the match was over 2&1 and the Men got on the board first.

Match 2 saw Tigers Mark & Thomas never getting behind as they took the 1st and then every time Matt & Ray for the Men clawed one back, the Tigers took the next.  The Men ran out of holes and it was a 2&1 win for the Tigers to bring the match back to all square.

In Match 3 it was Max & Matt who held John & Ben to a draw despite Matt being a club down after snapping his driver on the 1st tee as he was about to pose for the team photos!  Every time I looked over to check the score it seemed to be level so am not sure if any holes were won along the way.

Sam & Will went down to Alan & Gavin 3&1 in Match 4 but without site of the scorecard, not much else can be said apart from Alan must have been playing well as I could see Gavin playing a bit of army golf along the way!

Match 5 was a great one as they were just in front of us so we could see the frustration on the Men's part.  Despite Pete being 3 under gross after 6 holes, him and his partner Steve were only all square against Tigers James & James who were more than up to the challenge.  A great up and down from next the lake in front of all the spectators, the Tigers grabbed the last hole to win and bring the overall match back to all square with only one group to go.

Match 6 was the big one (cause I was in it of course). Captain Ken & I seemed to have the match in hand being 2 up 3 to play, both of us on the 7th green in 2 and Tiger Captain Ben and his partner Tom on the cart path and in the bunker respectively.  Seemingly from nowhere, Ben up and down's it for a win to keep the match alive.  With Ken in the water on the 8th, my boggie was not good enough and the Tigers levelled the match with one to play.  As we stood on the tee we could see the crowds and heard the applause (James's up and down for the Tiger win up ahead) which did not help the nerves!  The match notes above already tell you what happened but in the end, the result was the right one as no one deserved to lose today.

Great fun.
